JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR: The Musical

Eternal Legend Moment

Music That Makes Your Heart Beat

Jesus Christ Superstar the musical is opening.

Jesus Christ Superstar the musical returns. Following the successful 50th anniversary performances from 2022 to 2023, which were met with acclaim from both audiences and critics, Jesus Christ Superstar (hereinafter Superstar) is set to open on November 7, 2024, at the Gwanglim Art Center BBCH Hall. To continue the success of the 50th-anniversary production, Michael Lee and Park Eun-tae have been cast as Jesus, with Han Ji-sang, Yoon Hyung-ryeol, and Baek Hyung-hoon cast as Judas, raising expectations.

First premiered on Broadway in 1971, Superstar is a work completed with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, both world-renowned musical giants. It deals with the last seven days of Jesus' life, focusing on Judas, who respects Jesus but ultimately betrays him, and those who once praised Jesus as the king of the Jews but gradually change their stance. The characters are reinterpreted not just from a biblical perspective but as individuals struggling with human dilemmas, giving the work a unique vitality that transcends time and place.

The Only Stage Possible for Verified 'Scene Stealers'!

Michael Lee, Park Eun-tae, Han Ji-sang, Yoon Hyung-ryeol, Baek Hyung-hoon Return with Legendary Casting!

The legend returns. Superstar is famous for being a challenging work that all actors dream of but few can attempt. It requires absolute vocal range based on rock sound and the ability to master intense rhythm and sung-through (musical without dialogue) precision. Therefore, only the best "scene stealer" actors have been cast as Jesus and Judas. This production features actors who have been proven by audience and critic applause since the 2004 Korean premiere.

Michael Lee and Park Eun-tae have been cast as Jesus. Michael Lee, who is considered Jesus himself, returns for the fourth time following the 2013, 2015, and 2022 productions. He has a deep connection with Superstar, having played Simon on Broadway in 2000, Judas in St. Louis in 2005, and both Jesus and Judas in Washington in 2011. Park Eun-tae returns to Superstar 10 years after his successful debut as Jesus in 2013. Known for his overwhelming vocal talent and delicate performance, Park Eun-tae earned the nickname "Eun-Jesus" from the audience.

Han Ji-sang, Yoon Hyung-ryeol, and Baek Hyung-hoon are cast as Judas, who grapples with Jesus' increasing fame and its consequences. They have already proven their talents in past productions, with each bringing unique energy to the role.

In addition to Jesus and Judas, Kim Bo-kyung, Jang Eun-ah, and Jung Yoo-ji join as Mary, the only comfort to Jesus. Kim Tae-han and Ji Hyun-jun return as Pilate, bringing unparalleled charisma to the stage. The 17 ensemble members, who drive the narrative with dance and expression, are also ready to meet the audience. The symbolic OVERTURE (overture), encapsulating the 135-minute story of pain, joy, and climax, will open the Superstar performance with a clear concept.

Superstar began as a concept album in 1970, marking the start of the legendary partnership between lyricist Tim Rice and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. The album sold over 10 million copies worldwide and topped various Billboard charts. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1971 and in the West End in 1972, where it ran for eight years, breaking records until Cats surpassed it in 1989. From 1972 to 1980, Superstar generated over $238 million (320 billion KRW) in revenue worldwide. A US tour started in 2019 and resumed in 2021 after a pandemic hiatus, continuing in 2024 in the UK, Australia, the Netherlands, Hungary, Norway, and Japan.

In Korea, the first official licensed performance was in 2004, co-produced with RUG (The Really Useful Group), and the Korean production team led the process. Subsequent performances in 2006, 2013, and 2015 solidified its status as a steady-seller musical. The 50th-anniversary performance in 2022 focused on the originality of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's music while creating a new space that expressed the essence of the work.

The music of Superstar, with its blend of rock opera and classical rock, continues to captivate audiences. Music director Kim Sung-soo praises the timeless nature of the music, which feels contemporary despite being composed in 1970. The unique energy of actors Michael Lee, Park Eun-tae, Han Ji-sang, Yoon Hyung-ryeol, and Baek Hyung-hoon brings the music to life, promising an explosive performance.

SYNOPSIS

The Greatest Event of the Year

The Last Seven Days of Jesus' Life

Jesus is worshipped by the masses, but they do not understand the heaven he speaks of and only chase after miracles before their eyes. Mary, who truly understands Jesus' intentions, cares deeply for him, while Judas, one of Jesus' twelve disciples, is torn between respect for his master and frustration with Jesus' idealistic actions.

Entering Jerusalem with the support of the crowd, Jesus faces scenes of revelry and traders at the temple, and lepers seeking healing and salvation. Exhausted by the crowd's failure to grasp his teachings, Jesus is overwhelmed by human dilemmas and fatigue. Mary wants to comfort Jesus but hesitates to approach him.

Meanwhile, the authorities conspiring to eliminate Jesus use Judas' inner conflict to lead Jesus to his death. Foreseeing his fate, Jesus agonizes and cries out in the Garden of Gethsemane, ultimately surrendering to his destiny. Betrayed by Judas and handed over to the soldiers, the final days of Jesus, marked by significant events, begin...
